Appropriation

When I first heard of appropriation I really wasn’t sure what that methodology was all about. As I started learning more about, I realized that it is another technique that I can and should think about applying to my current practice.

I had to include google’s definition here. It serves as a reference and I keep coming back and read it again because every time it opens my mind to a different direction and prompts me to get out of my comfort zone and look for other ways of presenting my work.

Google’s definition of Appropriation in art is the use of pre-existing objects or images with little or no transformation applied to them. The use of appropriation has played a significant role in the history of the arts. In the visual arts, to appropriate means to properly adopt, borrow, or recycle.

When I was exploring Penelope Umbrico’s work, I came across work of Pierre Bismuth. While this interview doesn’t relate to photography, it provides very creative approach to experimentation with various forms of art.
